Forklift Tank Safety
The propane powered lift truck is one of the most popular kinds of lift trucks. These machinery are powered by propane, which come with some considerations that should be accounted for. It is extremely important that Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is worn all the time to be safe.
PPE or Personal Protective Equipment
Propane is a very cold gas. It is too cold to touch because skin contact can result in serious burns. When you are exchanging the propane tank or re-fueling, be sure to put on thick gloves and goggles or a full face shield. Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is a requirement to be used on location so as to keep the driver as safe as possible. PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is a standard workplace requirement for most companies using this equipment and if the driver does not have the correct things on, such as safety goggles, steel-toe boots, a hardhat and that than she or he may be forbidden from operating the machine.
Inspect the Valve
If you are in the process of exchanging the tank, be certain that the valve on the new tank is absolutely turned off prior to connecting the fuel line. This is extremely vital because when you are inserting the fuel line into an open valve, you would release the propane gas. This situation can create a potentially dangerous condition.
Fire Extinguisher
Having a fire extinguisher on hand when re-fueling is occurring or during the time the tank is being changed out is one more essential safety measure to have implemented. Nearly all businesses have fire extinguishers located near the refueling post. It is better to have one close and not require it, than to need one and not have one nearby. Nearly all safety rules need this is set up on location also.
Secure the Tank
Most propane tanks are strapped securely into place by some type of strap or restraining device. Be sure that this device is properly working and used correctly so that you could prevent the tank from falling or shifting, because this can also lead to a hazardous situation.
