History
In the year 1919, Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started. The company was founded by an engineer and pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology by Anton Raky. The original company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937, when the Salzgitter Group bought a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machines. During the year 1986, the company obtained the grab product division from Peiner AG. Immediately after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years. At present, SMAG is the market leader in the world, using grabs for global cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
