Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is provided by large industrial batteries that have to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety measures must be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be located near the charging place. The route to the station should not be blocked and a worker who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Never permit items like lighters or matches to be used when somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging place correctly ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
