A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine which is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Typically, order pickers are powered by electricity. These kind of equipment are mainly used in a warehouse setting. Usually they are utilized for moving pallets and completing specific jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be lifted up to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. For instance, if the materials required, are situated on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then entire platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
When the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker could be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, some companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to complete these particular jobs at some companies instead.
