Driving a lift truck is much more complex than driving a vehicle. A forklift operator must be really trained and skilled in the operation of a forklift. Driving a lift truck needs a high level of concentration. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also known as OSHA reports that 85 individuals die in mishaps related to forklifts each year year. Approximately 35,000 individuals are injured every year in accidents related to lift trucks. Nearly 50% of operator deaths result from a lift truck tip over.

Drivers need to be able to accurately assess load weights in order to avoid the equipment from tipping over. The load weight in construction settings will often be posted on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the total weight of the load will be around 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the operator must take additional weight into consideration.

It could be unsafe if the operator makes poorly informed guesses as the loads actual weight and whether the machinery can handle the load. If a driver could not be certain regarding the load weight, he should ask for assistance from the supervisor.

Another cause of tip overs is failure to pull up close enough to a building to place or lift a load using an extended boom. It is important to use the load chart to avoid tipping the forklift. Even if a forklift does not really tip over, an accident has happened whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Though damage may not be obvious, the back axle could have been broken upon hitting the ground.

It is even possible for forklifts to tip even when not carrying a load. Unloaded lift trucks could tip just after a driver has positioned a load on scaffolding utilizing an extended boom. If the driver reverses the forklift and turns suddenly whilst bringing the boom down, the forklift's center of gravity would be pushed to the edges and a tip over might take place. A driver must always use the joysticks to retract and lower the fork.
